Program: Local History Collections
June is local history month at PLS! We will be discussing the preservation of local history items, digitization projects from RRLC, and highlighting local history collections in Evergreen. Below you will find a brief description of the three topics.
Digitization: Laura Osterhout from RRLC will talk about two statewide digitization projects (New York Heritage and New York State Historic Newspapers), RRLC's role in digitization in the region, and how your library can participate in these projects, including the national project Digital Public Library of America.
Preservation: Leah Hamilton will present In Preserving Your Local History Archive. She will share ideas and best practices for storing books, photographs, and other materials in a local history collection, evaluating and correcting environmental conditions, dealing with mold and pests, purchasing archival storage materials, and finding preservation assistance when needed.
Local History and Evergreen: Lindsay Stratton and Kathryn Riedener will discuss methods for highlighting your local history collections in the online catalog.
