Program - Libraries as Providers of Digital Content

In the September virtual summit on eBooks R. David Lankes from Syracuse University’s iSchool concluded that “Our focus must be on conversations and learning, not reading." “The digital world is our opportunity and issue.” “We must think beyond artifacts and physical limitations.” And finally, “The future is bright for libraries and librarians, but ONLY IF WE MAKE IT SO.”
To be more blunt, as Eli Neiburger from the Ann Arbor Public Library (MI) stated “Libraries are screwed”…if we don’t adapt. The public will purchase their content at the moment of desire, for their e-reader. Libraries need to build a new niche as unique content providers. They will become publishers of digital content that is unique and local.
We will listen to people who are doing just what Lankes and Neilburger say we must do. Hear about the Civil War letters project at Naples Public Library from Blanche Warner. See how Archivist Linda Clark Benedict entices faculty to use the archives in their teaching at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Learn how RRLC is helping area libraries and organizations turn resources into digital content through the FLAG program from Debbie Emerson and April Younglove.
