Director Briefing - October 16, 2023

Closed dates for 2024 from Dan

Please add your 2024 closed dates in Evergreen in the next few weeks. Having them in Evergreen by Friday, 11/17 will give you enough time to make sure that future checkouts aren't impacted.

Your closed dates are mostly holidays when your library won't be open. If you are typically open on Saturdays year-round except for during the summer, you will also have to add closed dates for your summer Saturdays.

Adding closed dates affects future checkouts' due dates and overdue fine accruals.

Please review this OWWL Docs page before adding any closed dates. Please email evergreen@owwl.org if you have any questions or if you would like a walkthrough on how to add your 2024 closed dates.

Kanopy on owwl.org Website

Patrons can now access Kanopy at https://owwl.org/resources/ and https://owwl.org/digitallibrary/ .

As an update, we've had 7,275 visits to the Kanopy site as of this morning. That totals 11,731 minutes of video streaming. Not too bad for the first few weeks of the program.

Book Challenges Page

As the Book Challenge Review Committee reviews titles, we are adding them to the Freedom to Read page on owwl.org. I'm still working on making this page look pretty. You can now access committee reports if your library has a challenge.

Join the National Study on Library Card Access from the Division of Library Development

By responding to this survey, you will be contributing to the first known sampling of public library card access trends across the United States. The survey collects data about your library’s cardholder signup process for adults and children/teenagers, as well as how these policies and procedures are revised. Brooklyn Public Library will share findings in a report issued to the field in spring 2024; and will convene a working group next summer to publish a framework for library leaders of best practices around cardholder access.

Ensure YOUR library is represented.

Take the Survey: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7495017/decc591a954COSLA

Survey Audience: The survey is intended for anyone who currently works or recently worked (within the past 12 months) at a public library in the United States and who is familiar with their library’s cardholder signup process. Your personal information will be kept confidential.

Multiple organizations are distributing this survey; therefore, you may also receive an invitation to participate elsewhere, or you may see a link for this survey in a library publication or forum. We ask that individuals take this Library Card Access Survey only once (however we can accept responses from multiple individuals on behalf of the same library).

Participants may provide their name and email address to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $25 (USD) gift card from Giftogram, which allows recipients to select from a list of retailers. One hundred (100) gift cards will be issued.

Questions? If you have questions about this project, please contact Amy Mikel, Director of Customer Experience at Brooklyn Public Library, at amikel@bklynlibrary.org. If you have any technical questions about this survey, please feel free to contact Trevor Schlusemann from Avenue M Group (the market research firm administering the survey) at schlusemann@avenuemgroup.com.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
