Program

Why Early Literacy?

In the Planning Process, a role for public libraries in the 1990s was “Preschoolers’ Door to Learning”. In the 21st century, early literacy is where the identity and funding are, and public libraries are uniquely positioned to benefit from this shift. Early literacy implies that the six pre-literacy skills are part of the library’s service program, and they are modeled to parents as a child’s first teacher.
We will look at this slightly different role and explore early literacy programming and spaces. Lynne Madden, Christine LaTerra, and Stacey Wicksall will discuss how and why they do early literacy programming at Victor, Ontario, and Newark. Cassie Guthrie will show low-cost methods to integrate early literacy activities into library spaces. Joan Wicks from AWE will demonstrate AWE Early Literacy Station, a product librarians, parents and children love. She will provide guidance on applying for grants for the ELS, including the Dollar General Grant with a deadline of May 18th.
