Meeting Minutes - 1/9/14
Attending: Laurie, Stacey, Wendy, Sarah, Theresa, Pat
Absent: Cheryl, Kelley, Melissa
- We reviewed how to save a cart. Please create your cart using this format: "CT_your initials_date you created cart." Also, please use this same format when you get to the final order confirmation page when it asks for an internal PO number. You can place this information in the box on the page. Also, as per our last meeting, please create your cart on Monday and purchase cart on Friday of your buying week, so there is new content available every Friday.
- Wendy reviewed non-fiction buying. Of 35 non-fiction titles, only 8 were not religion-themed titles. Wendy is buying based on her judgement and money available. Religion requests are in the top 3 most requested titles, in addition to History and Biography.
- Holds were discussed. We will maintain the 7:1 ratio and purchase no more than 10 copies. Wendy buying holds.
- Patrons may not know that they are able to return books early. This may be something we want to mention/promote to patrons. Also, Wendy is available for Overdrive training. She is not seeing the patron requests like she used to. Perhaps patrons are becoming more comfortable with technology?
- Overdrive statistics were given to committee members to review their library stats from May - Dec 31, 2013.
- Pat handed out promotional ideas including how to have a device raffle and how to have a storyhour using ebooks. Some libraries have done this (Geneva) and it has gone well. Sarah (Wadsworth) may do one at some point, but it will be a separate program, not part of the regular story hour. Laurie (Bloomfield) tried to do one, but could not find a suitable book. The Disney collection was not appropriate.
- Committee asked PLS to look into getting a quote for Tumblebooks as another children's ebook alternative.
- Kelley, Melissa and Sarah are all listed as children's content buyers. Since we don't need 3 people buying this genre exclusively, it was asked that each of these buyers buys other genres as well as children's titles.
- Streaming video from Overdrive was discussed. This is still in the beta test stage with overdrive. PLS will continue to monitor how this is going and bring to committee to discuss once Overdrive has worked out the bugs.
- Downloading music was discussed. Laurie suggested this would be hard to fit into the budget as it would be taking away from current resources.
- Format choices also discussed. Stacey was concerned that title formats are available in other systems, but not in ours. For example, a book available in one system in MP3 format is availale in ours. PLS to discuss with Overdrive rep. It could be a budgeting issue has some systems have larger budgets resulting in more buying power. Blog post from "Librarian in Black" talks about this.
