Bar Patron

Concepts

Barring a patron record prevents all circulation transactions at every library and prevents access to online My Account features, databases, and OWWL2go.

ALERT! In general, the bar function should not be used, except in extreme and extenuating circumstances. Because each library is independant, there is no one defining circumstance. However, records should NEVER be barred for bad or missing patron information (contact information, statistical categories, etc.), to alert libraries of an issue, or if the patron has broken a library-specific policy.

Handle account updates

  • If general information regarding a patron account needs to be shared among libraries, use an Alert or Note
  • If the patron has left the PLS service area, or the patron is deceased, mark the account inactive
  • If the patron's mailing address is bad, mark the address invalid
  • If the patron's phone number is bad, mark the phone number invalid
  • If the patron's email is bad, mark the email invalid
Other account changes should be caught during the account expiration/update.

How to bar or un-bar a user record

  1. Retrieve the patron
  2. Click Edit
  3. Scroll to the Barred field and check or un-check the box
  4. Scroll to the Alert box, enter a reason for the bar
  5. Click Save
