Shelving Locations

Shelving locations represent where in the library an item can be found. They can be administered at Administration → Local Administration → Shelving Locations Editor.

OWWL member library staff who have Item Cataloging permissions are able to create and update their own shelving locations, or may request that OWWL staff do so by submitting a support ticket.

Please see the OWWL policy on shelving locations for more information on usage and naming.

Creating new shelving locations

To add a shelving location

  1. Click New Shelving Location.
  2. Select your parameters for your shelving locations.
    • Choose the owning Org Unit of the shelving location (your library).
    • Type the name of the shelving location in the name field.
      • Is OPAC Visible?, choose whether you would like items in this shelving location to appear in the catalog.
      • Can Circulate? can items in this location circulate?
      • Is Holdable? are items in this location holdable?
      • Hold Capture Requires Verification is not used by OWWL.
      • Checkin Alert is also not used by OWWL.
      • Is Deleted?, this sets the deletion flag for a shelving location to yes. Only OWWL staff are able to delete shelving locations.
      • Label Prefix and Label Suffix are also not used by OWWL.
      • URL is not used by OWWL.
  3. Select Save.
Whether an item can be circulated, is holdable, or visible in the catalog, is controlled by several factors: item status, shelving location, hold and/or circulation policies, and item attributes (the options in the Holdings Editor). Evergreen checks the value of each factor until it encounters a NO. An item can be circulated, holdable or visible when all factors are set to YES.

Editing shelving locations

  1. Select Administration → Local Administration → Shelving Locations Editor.
  2. Select the shelving location you would like to edit.
  3. Select the actions button and select Edit Selected. Or double click on the shelving location.
  4. Make your changes and click Save.
