PLS Notes July 24, 2020

Happy Friday! Here is this week's round up of news, information, and resources from the PLS team. As a reminder, PLS Notes is indexed on OWWL Docs under Member Library Documentation so past issues can be easily referenced.

Get Pocket!

Do you end each day with dozens of open browser tabs of things you wanted to circle back to at the end of the day? Or are you always emailing yourself links to look at later? Put them in your Pocket instead! With Pocket you can store all your online content (articles, videos, etc.) in one place. The items you save to Pocket are visible on any device—phone, tablet, or computer. The very best part? Pocket will read your saved articles to you so you can catch up on all those news bits and items of interest while you drive, cook, clean, knit, workout, or lounge on the hammock. Click here to learn more about Pocket or download the app from your app store.

Office Hours

Ron and Suzanne will continue to hold Office Hours for Directors on Fridays through August 14. Jump on to say "Hello," ask a COVID or non-COVID library question, or discuss your favorite Fla-Vor-Ice flavor. The GoToMeeting information can be found here.

Rogue Reminders

Are you working with a patron who accidentally placed a hold for pickup at one library when they meant to select a different library? Changing the pickup library for a hold often causes the hold to go rogue. So rather than editing the existing hold by changing the pickup library, the best thing to do is to cancel the "bad" hold and place a new hold with the correct pickup library selected. Still seeing rogue holds for items that are trying to be put in transit? Let us know at

Conference Updates

  • Registration is now open for the (now virtual) 2020 ARSL Conference, held September 28 to October 2. This annual event is a wonderful resource for libraries that serve smaller populations, are geographically isolated, or have a small staff. Click here to learn more.

  • Librarian Tech Camp, hosted by RRLC and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, will also be going virtual this year, August 17 to August 20. This event is free and open to all library staff. Registration will open at the end of July. Keep an eye on RRLC's website for more information.

  • NYLA is working on changes to its 2020 Annual Conference. There are two options currently being considered: a "hybrid" event with a modified slate of programs taking place in-person with an option to participate in select programs virtually or moving the entire conference to a virtual format. A decision will be announced on August 1. Additional information can be found here.

Save the Dates

Upcoming PLS meetings, training opportunities, and workshops: All PLS-sponsored gatherings will continue to be conducted virtually. Visit the PLS Calendar for more information.
