PLS Notes July 17, 2020

Happy Friday! Here is this week's round up of news, information, and resources from the PLS team. As a reminder, PLS Notes is indexed on OWWL Docs under Member Library Documentation so past issues can be easily referenced.

Design School

Many OWWL libraries have discovered Canva for their print and social media marketing. Canva can provide a professional look and feel to your library's promotional tools without the expense of a Graphic Design team, but getting started--or keeping pace with all the updates--can feel a little daunting. Fortunately, Canva has a Design School with courses, tutorials, and blog posts to teach you the basics of Canva, branding your designs, using Canva effectively on social media, and more. Click here to start learning the hows and whats of Canva.

2020 ARSL Conference

This year's ARSL (Association for Small & Rural Libraries) Conference will be held virtually from September 28 to October 2. ARSL's annual conference has been a wonderful resource for libraries that serve smaller populations, are geographically isolated, and/or have a reduced staff. PLS will once again be represented at this national conference: Hope is member of the Conference Committee helping to plan this great event, and Suzanne will be presenting on Social Media for Small Libraries. Registration opened on July 15. Click here to learn more.

Tech Camp

Librarian Tech Camp, hosted by Rochester Regional Library Council and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, will also be going virtual this year, August 17 to August 20. This event is free and open to all School, Public, Academic, and Special Library staff. Tech Camp will offer a variety of workshops featuring what's new in technology plus tips and tricks that can benefit your library and library communities. Registration will open at the end of July. Keep an eye on RRLC's website for more information.

  • If you haven't already, we recommend adding "Pickup Library" as a column on your Holds Pull List. Now, is there an item on your pull list that's supposed to go to another library? That's a Rogue Hold! Please email us at with the Hold ID or item barcode.

  • Are you still missing the confirmation dialog that is supposed to pop up asking you whether you'd like to charge a patron when marking an item as damaged? Try clearing your cache (make sure not to clear cookies and other site data!). Still not seeing it? Let us know at

  • Patron Self-Registration launched on July 1. Patrons can now sign up for a library card online by clicking the "Request Library Card" link at the bottom left of the front OPAC page. Be sure to review the documentation about Pending Patrons available on OWWL Docs, and please be sure to check your pending patron lists regularly!

  • Dan and Kathryn continue to add to the Recently Asked Questions page on OWWL Docs. Help Desk Tickets and emails to are still welcomed and encouraged, but you may save time if your question has already been asked and answered on the RAQ page.
