Monday Briefing - January 04, 2022
Assembly Bill A5837B - Vetoed by Governor Hochul
A5837B relates to requiring publishers to offer licenses for electronic books to libraries under reasonable terms.
Last week Governor Hochul vetoed this bill. NYLA has been doing a lot of work on this one, so this veto is a disappointing step in the wrong direction. However, there is still hope. A vetoed bill can become law if two-thirds of the members of each house vote to override the Governor's veto.
There has also been a lawsuit filed against the bill (
AAP Sues to Block Maryland, New York Library E-book Laws), so that may complicate things as well.
If an updated advocacy piece comes out, I will make sure it gets to you.
Mask Mandate Extended to February 1, 2022
The mask mandate by Governor Hochul originally set to expire this month has been extended to February 1, 2022. At that time (or most likely before that) the Governor and her team will decide if that will be extended.
The
FAQ page on New York's website still shows the January date, however, it has been extended according to her December 31 press briefing.
Library Card Order from Kelly
I will be placing a library card order within the next few weeks. Please check your supply and plan accordingly to receive the group discount as we only place orders twice a year (January and July). There are 3 products to choose from: cards, keytags, and card/keytag combo. The vendor requests a minimum quantity of 250 per product per library. If you would like to order less than the 250 minimum, please let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Please complete the order form using the link below on docs.owwl.org and submit your order no later than
Friday, January 7, 2022.

Delivery and Winter Weather
Welcome to winter! As snow continues to fall, we are leaving discretion up to Delivery Drivers on whether they can safely deliver to a library based on snow/ice conditions. If your library misses a delivery due to weather, we will bring materials during your next scheduled delivery. Please make sure parking and delivery areas are plowed, shoveled, and salted. Thank you.
Annual Report Workshop
Kelly and Suzanne will host a review of the 2021 Annual Report for Public and Association Libraries on February 4, 2022 at 10:00 AM. We will outline changes/updates as well as the new questions related to Minimum Standards, programming, and COVID-19. Directors and/or the Annual Report Contact from each library should plan to attend.
